Track loan and mortgage payoff, month by month

In Kasa, a loan is a debt account with a monthly payment plan. Each payment counts as spending in its category and lowers what you owe, so your monthly spending and your net worth both stay right. You see how much is paid and left, every payment made and planned, and the date of your last payment.

How a loan works in Kasa

  1. Add the loan as a debt with what you owe today.
  2. Give it a payment plan: the monthly amount, the day it’s paid, the spending category and, if you know it, the month of the last payment.
  3. Payments post themselves each month on their day. The plan stops after the last one.

Open the loan to see a progress bar, one square for every payment (made ones filled, planned ones empty), the next payment and the date of the last one.

Why a payment is both spending and paying down debt

A loan payment is money you can’t spend on anything else this month, so it belongs in your spending. It also makes you less in debt, so your net worth should go up by the same amount. Kasa does both with one entry, which most expense trackers can’t: they either count the payment as an expense and forget the debt, or move money to the loan and hide it from your spending.

An extra one-off payment is different: record it as a transfer from your account to the loan. It lowers what you owe without counting as spending.

Interest and your lender’s statement

Kasa doesn’t calculate interest. When your lender’s statement shows a different balance, set the loan’s real value on that day and Kasa counts from there. Your net worth and the remaining balance follow straight away.

Works for

Mortgages, car loans, student loans, personal loans, buy-now-pay-later plans and money you owe to family or friends. Money other people owe you can be tracked as an asset.

Questions

Can I track more than one loan?

Yes. Each loan is its own debt account with its own plan, and all of them count negative in your net worth.

What if my payment amount changes?

Edit the plan. Payments already made stay as they were; new ones use the new amount.

Is the loan in a different currency supported?

Yes. A loan can be in any of the 31 currencies Kasa supports, and totals are shown in your main currency.
